ALEX R. JOHNSON is a Brooklyn, NY based filmmaker.

Johnson studied film theory and writing at the University of Vermont before moving to New York City in 1993. Since that time, he has worked steadily in the film and commercial industry, working his way up from Production Assistant to Executive Producer in only six years.  Directors he has worked with and produced for include: Joe Berlinger, Steve Buscemi, Henry Corra, Susan Froemke, Braden King, Albert Maysles, Pete Sillen and Harvey Wang.

His collaboration with Henry Corra, SAME SEX AMERICA, a feature length documentary about the battle for gay marriage in Massachusetts, premiered on SHOWTIME in June of 2005 and was called  ”(A) heartfelt and moving documentary” (CHICAGO TRIBUNE) that “…sets a standard that will be hard to match” (VARIETY).

He also collaborated with both Henry Corra and Joe Berlinger (METALLICA: SOME KIND OF MONSTER, PARADISE LOST, BROTHERS KEEPER) on a verité series pilot for VH1.

His short films, PICKUP AND RETURN and THANKSGIVING have screened at over 45 festivals worldwide and won ten awards. THE LONDON FILM FESTIVAL said THANKSGIVING was “a bittersweet and darkly funny tale of urban isolation” while the FLORIDA FILM FESTIVAL called it “hilariously melancholy”.

He was recently invited to the 2008 HAMPTONS INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL SCREENWRITERS’ LAB, with his feature screenplay IN UNITY THERE WAS STRENGTH (previously titled LA SOBRINA). There he worked one to one with mentors Maria Maggenti (THE INCREDIBLY TRUE ADVENTURES OF TWO GIRLS IN LOVE, PUCCINI FOR BEGINNERS, WITHOUT A TRACE) and Whit Stillman (METROPOLITAN, BARCELONA, LAST DAYS OF DISCO) to strengthen the script  through discussion and inspire some new direction for rewrites.

Currently he is producing I AM SECRETLY AN IMPORTANT MAN, a new feature length documentary for director Pete Sillen, as well as continuing to produce commercials to pay the rent.

He lives in Park Slope, Brooklyn.
